Stonewall Cemetery, Winchester, VA
June 6th is Confederate Memorial Day in Winchester in honor of the untimely death of their beloved cavalryman Turner Ashby. A special ceremony was held at Winchester’s Stonewall Confederate Cemetery and in preparation, every grave was adorned with a bright new battle flag. We were able to photograph the entire site before anyone arrived and the experience was very special. I spent some extra time at Ashby’s grave (in left-center background of photo), citing a personal prayer for he and his fallen comrades. Fortunately there was plenty of shade and a gentle breeze on the CSA side. Across the street sits the US National Cemetery and we spent some time there too, although the total lack of trees made the experience far less pleasant. ‘Hot’ doesn’t even begin to describe it. I wonder if the lack of shade for the Yankees was intentional?
